Nursing Students¡¯ Experiences of Patient Fall During Clinical Practice

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine patient fall experiences during clinical practice of nursing students.

Methods: Participants were 11 nursing students with clinical practice experience. Data were collected through individual interviews using semi-structured research questions. Collected data were analyzed using conventional content analysis.
Results: Results of this study had six categories and 17 subcategories. These six categories were: ¡®Changed perception of fall¡¯, ¡®Emotions experienced by a sudden patient fall¡¯, ¡®Emotions regarding the nurse's attitude according to the patient's fall situation¡¯, ¡®Difficult patient fall management¡¯, ¡®Recognizing the importance of fall education in class and clinical practice¡¯, and ¡®Seeking strategies to improve fall management ability¡¯.

Conclusion: This study served as an opportunity to recognize the importance of fall management and the need for education through patient fall experienced by nursing students during clinical practice. It will also be the beginning of research for developing and applying fall management education programs for nursing students. Further studies are needed to verify the effectiveness of the fall management education program development and application.
